Sad death of Richards Bay endangered Humpback dolphin

Humpback dolphin found dead at Casuarinas in harbour

ONE of Richards Bay’s endangered Humpback dolphins was discovered dead at the Casuarinas beach inside the harbour on Tuesday afternoon.

Local resident Wessel Jacobs found the rotting carcass of the mammal, which appeared to have been dead for a few days.

His Facebook post alerted the Zululand Observer, who then contacted Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife as well as national researchers from the SouSA project, an inter-group collaboration doing scientific research on Indian Ocean Humpback dolphins in South Africa.

The cause of death could not be determined owing to the excessive decomposition of the carcass, but there were no apparent injury marks.

Scientists are studying the photographs and have requested skin and blubber samples.
