Student registration issue clarified at Unizulu

30 University of Zululand (Unizulu) transport and logistic students removed from their classes and informed that they were to be deregistered

SOME 30 University of Zululand (Unizulu) transport and logistic students were up in arms at the Richards Bay campus last week and on Monday after they were removed from their classes and informed that they were to be deregistered.

Unizulu SRC Administrator, Mayenzeke Chiya, met with the ZO this week to provide clarity around the issue. ‘After hearing about the news last week I rushed to the Richards Bay campus to meet with the students.

‘They told me they were informed by the university that they were being de-registered despite them meeting all the requirements for their course,’ Chiya said.

‘I approached management and was informed that these students not only failed to meet the requirements, but some also did not meet the entry level points for their course, some with as low as 16 points,’ Chiya said.

He said the office of the Registrar is currently investigating how the students were registered if they did not meet the requirements.

‘These students are on our database and once they improve their marks, they will be given first priority to register to study at the university.

’ While investigations are yet to be completed, Chiya urged students to come forward if they are aware of any corruption taking place.

‘People who know of anyone asking students for money to secure a position for them at the university, need to come forward and tell us.

‘We will keep their identity confidential, but we need to get rid of corruption,’ Chiya said.

Prerequisites Meanwhile the issue around prerequisites have been highlighted as a major concern for students, who early last week handed over a memorandum to university management.

Prerequisite rule allows a student to move to another module on the next level that interlinks with a previous module.

Students demanded that the prerequisite rule be abolished for final year students. Chiya approached the university Senate with the students’ concerns, to no avail.

According to Chiya the Senate noted that the abolishment of the prerequisite rule would take away from the curriculum.

‘If they remove the prerequisite rule it will reduce the quality of the graduates that the university produces.’

‘It is on that basis that university management said that they will not lift the prerequisite rule,’ he said.
