Last night’s freak thunderstorm certainly caused some nervous excitement at Addison Park in Empangeni after a lightning bolt hit the cricket club’s electrical distribution (DB) board, causing a massive explosion.
A couple of people were standing on the uMhlathuze Athletic Club’s deck when all of a sudden a mighty crack from the sky had the sparks flying.
Whilst making light after the experience, everyone realised how close they were to possible seriously injury or even death.
‘I was really jolted by the incident. I got such a fright that my heart was beating in my ears,’ said one of the bystanders.
This lightning bolt caused a complete blowout of the DB board in the cricket clubhouse and knocked out Bar Reign’s telephone line and electricity in the kitchen.
Rhinos rugby captain Warren Graff was so charged by the whole incident after standing next to the DB board that he know firmly believes he is Zululand’s Usain Bolt. His mates, however, insist calling him Insane Bolt.
The bang was so loud that Graff thought his time had come, while Richards Allan’s car alarm went off.
The last time there was such a loud noise at Addison Park was when Lance Klusener thumped one over the Blue Gum trees and into the road during a Nissan Shield match many years ago.
Bar Reign owner Nytasha Graff said the whole experience was ‘electrifying’ and was grateful that there was no need to add fried sportsmen to the menu.
On a serious note though, the earth leakage cable took the hit in the DB board, which has resulted in quite substantial damage.
An electrician will come in to fix the problem, but Bar Reign will need a new telephone wire.
