DESPITE all the goodwill, experience and spiritual upliftment they continually extend, unless they gain financial support, the Richards Bay Combined Seafarers Mission will soon find itself in deep water.
For almost four decades, the Mission has been a haven for sailors who arrive at the Port of Richards Bay after long weeks at sea and often burdened with loneliness, fatigue, homesickness, personal- and work-related problems.
The Mission to Seafarers steps in, providing care and love in a secure environment, catering to the practical and especially the spiritual needs of the sailors.
But the centre is suffering under severe financial constraints and is weighing up its options, one of which is to release the full-time chaplain and other staff – which would be a seriously retrogressive step.
With revenue dropping and costs increasing and with limited cash reserves, the only other option to remain viable would be assistance from the general public and especially the shipping fraternity.
These can either be in the form of cash donations or help in kind, for example in the painting and renovation of the Mission, which is in dire need of maintenance.
Increased membership would also alleviate the financial situation.
