Spike in Richards Bay CBD crime

Public to exercise caution in the Richards Bay CBD

INCIDENTS of theft out of motor vehicles, business burglaries and robbery common have increased in the Richards Bay Central Business District (CBD) recently.

This was reported at the Richards Bay SAPS Ground Operational Coordination Committee (GOCOC) meeting this week, where police met with local private security companies to discuss crime trends and crime prevention measures.

The SAPS crime overview for January, compared to the same time last year, indicated an increase in property crimes in Dollar Drive, Bullion Boulevard, Paseta Parade and Rupee Rift streets.

Several theft out of motor vehicle incidents were reported in Bullion Boulevard and Dollar Drive where criminals smashed vehicle windows.

Robbery common cases have also been prevalent at Taxi City where commuters were targeted for their belongings.

Richards Bay Police Station Commander, Brigadier Brenda Mgenga, has urged the public to exercise caution at all times and refrain from leaving any belongings inside their vehicles.

‘We have increased patrols in the parking lots around the CBD area, but appeal to the public to remove all valuables from their vehicles, even if they are just going into stores for a few minutes.

‘Our local security companies have responded favourably to our call to work together and combat crime and we are grateful to them for offering their services to assist us.

‘We want to continue working with all our local security stakeholders to eradicate crime and invite all security companies to our next meeting on 9 March at the Richards Bay SAPS boardroom at 11am, ‘ said Mgenge.
