HAWKS Richards Bay members have finally caught one of the ruthless men believed to have been involved in the fatal cash-in-transit heist at the Engen 1-Stop along the N2 near Empangeni in December.
Nkunzi Mzimela made his first appearance in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of armed robbery, murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
He was apprehended at the eSikhaleni Mall by the Hawks with the assistance of the Empangeni K9 and Tactical Response Team units.
During his arrest, he was found in possession of two unlicensed firearms with twenty live rounds of ammunition.
The seized firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any crime in the country.
On 12 December, a crew of six accosted security guards who were collecting cash at the southbound service station and fired shots, fatally wounding a Richards Bay G4S guard who had already been laying on the ground in accordance with their instructions.
They stole an undisclosed amount of cash as well as the .38 revolver that belonged to the 31-year-old murder victim.
