Thanda beaten but still upbeat
After a magnificent run of 18 games unbeaten, Thanda Royal Zulu finally found themselves on the losing side when they went down 2-0 away to Pretoria University on Saturday
THE inevitable has happened – and maybe it’s not such a bad thing.
After a magnificent run of 18 games unbeaten, Thanda Royal Zulu finally found themselves on the losing side when they went down 2-0 away to Pretoria University on Saturday.
Both goals were scored in the first half, after which Thanda fought back strongly but failed to find the net.
As disappointed as the players, management and fans are at the first blemish of their record, the loss may prove a blessing in disguise, with the pressure of protecting the perfect record now off the Amabhubesi.
Also, they would have been rudely awakened from any dream that the quest for promotion has already been accomplished.
Looking at it realistically, Thanda have drawn seven matches in the current NFD campaign, showing the league is extremely competitive and there are very few easy opponents.
Since the mid-season break they have had one win, two draws and now one loss.
They are now going to have to show some steel, look after the home points and pick up what they can on the road.
That’s Thanda’s mission now, with 11 games left – six at home – starting with yet another dangerous opponent in Mthatha Bucks on Sunday 5 March at the uMhlathuze Stadium.
The remaining fixtures are:
• Sunday 5 March vs Mthatha Bucks. Home (3.30pm)
• Saturday 18 March vs Milano United. Away (3.30pm)
• Sunday 2 April vs Santos. Home (3pm)
• Sunday 16 April vs Jomo Cosmos. Away (3pm)
• Wednesday 19 April vs Black Leopards. Home (3pm)
• Saturday 22 April vs Royal Eagles. Away (3pm)
• Sunday 30 April vs Magesi. Home (3pm)
