Criminals targeting vehicles at residences in Richards Bay

Attempted vehicle thefts on the rise

ATTEMPTED thefts of vehicles from residential properties in Brackenham, Birdswood and Arboretum in recent weeks have prompted the Arbovlei Community Policing Forum (CPF) to issue a warning to all residents to be extra cautious.

According to CPF representative Burger Beukes, criminals are using the modus operandi of lifting property gates off the rails to gain entry into premises.

While the theft attempts were foiled, Beukes is urging residents to ensure all safety measures are in place at all times, especially as criminals are prone to use the rain and wet weather to strike.

‘During the previous attempts, the suspects reportedly fled the scenes in two white sedan vehicles.

‘At the one property in Birdswood, they tried to lift the gate with the intention of removing it off the rail, but it activated the alarm and the suspects fled the scene.

‘Reported residential burglaries have decreased and the night patrols have been continuing to act as a deterrent for criminal activity.

‘We must also applaud the efforts of our Richards Bay SAPS and all Community Policing Forums for their visibility and crime fighting initiatives, as well as the recent arrests which have seen crime take a significant drop.’
