Two men attempt to rob bread truck

One suspect was apprehended in the bushes alongside the road while the other managed to get away

QUICK thinking on the part of two truck drivers on Monday foiled the suspected hijacking of an Albany bread delivery truck in Richards Bay.

Just before midday, when the truck was travelling along the North Central Arterial in the vicinity of the Wildenweide traffic lights, the two drivers noticed two hangers-on in their side mirrors.

As is reportedly the norm on that stretch of road, two suspects had jumped onto the back of the bread truck for, according to the one who was apprehended, purposes of hitching a ride.

However, according to Votella Security whose officer assisted in apprehending the suspect, stealing bread out of the back of a moving delivery truck is a popular crime.

The security officer had been out on patrol when he noticed the truck stopping and the suspects fleeing.

One suspect was apprehended in the bushes alongside the road while the other managed to get away.

Truck drivers have allegedly resorted to carrying weapons such as golf clubs, to intimidate such criminals and prevent hijackings.

At the time of going to print, the SAPS was yet to attend the scene and take the suspect into custody.
