Bay residents without electricity

Power has been restored to some of the affected areas

RICHARDS Bay residents this afternoon (Friday) fell victim to a massive power outage which is being repaired line-by-line.

According to the uMhlathuze municipal call centre, lights went off at about 2pm.

A transformer in the Hercules substation near Netcare The Bay Hospital had blown, rendering the hospital, as well as Birdswood, Veldenvlei and Wildenweide without power.

A hospital spokesperson said the problem was reported to the municipality and workers were on scene within 15 minutes.

Two-and-a-half hours later the crisis was over and power restored to the hospital.

However, residential areas further from the substation remain without power while repairs continue. Normal service should be restored to all affected areas by 7pm.
