Bubbling to the top of the pops

Wandile Bubbles Mnomiya marches into contention for the Voice South Africa competition

ENERGETIC Richards Bay muso Wandile ‘Bubbles’ Mnomiya has the voice – and she is not shy to showcase it to the nation.

The 23-year-old ‘diva’ qualified as a contestant in the South African version of the popular reality show, The Voice.

She got a foot in after impressing the judges during auditions in Durban last year.

This Afro-pop and jazz musician was then called back for the ‘blind auditions’ in Johannesburg, and had three of the four judges turning their chairs, wanting to work with her as her mentor.

As viewers saw in Sunday’s first series broadcast on MNet, she picked award-winning artists Lira to guide her.

‘She is the right person because we share the same music and I believe she has everything to mentor me and make me grow – apart from the fact I am also a big fan,’ said Bubbles

Born and raised in the dusty roads of KwaSokhulu Reserve outside Richards Bay, and being the only child of a jazz musician father and a soul fan mother, it’s no surprise she followed a musical path from early on in her life.

At the age of eight she had her first stage appearance and stole the hearts of many Zululander’s, impressing them with her vocal arrangements.

The bubbly star has paved her way in the industry and is definitely no stranger to the limelight.

Apart from working with the best in the industry, she has an overflowing bag of achievements.

Part of her accomplishments includes claiming the second spot in the uShaka Marine International Star Search competition in 2013, and collaborating with the queen of jazz, Nomalanga Hlubi, and the uMkhumbane jazz group.

However, one of the biggest highlights of her career was working with Oskido and the Kalawa Jazmee family after becoming a top three contestant in the popular music search show, X-Factor South Africa, in 2014.

‘I have been blessed and my community continues to support everything I do. God has blessed me with people who want me to grow and who are always behind me,’

Even though her mother wanted her to be a civil engineer, Wandile has proved she was born to sing on big stages and continues to fly the Zululand flag high.
