Local aneasthetics programme goes provincial
Health programme designed at Ngwelezana Hospital set to be rolled out at provincial level
A HEALTH programme designed at Ngwelezana Hospital is set to be rolled out at provincial level within the next few months.
In 2015 the Safe Aneasthesia Project, the brainchild of Ngwelezana’s Aneasthetics Department head, Dr Selina Sewpersad, earned the KZN MEC’s award for Service Excellence Through Innovation and Best Practice Award for the period 2014/2015.
Dr Sewpersad on Tuesday confirmed the expansion of the skills transfer programme, which ultimately aims to save lives through the transfer of techniques that have proved successful in practice.
With a strong focus on saving lives of mothers and their children, Dr Sewpersad hopes to transfer valuable experience learned while working as a specialist anaesthesiologist in the United Kingdom for six years before taking up her post at Ngwelezana.
Together with acting hospital CEO Dr Bright Madlala, who has thrown his weight behind the promotion of the programme, Sewpersad has built her department to a point where it operates on a technical level similar to that of a team in the UK.
The programme is also in line with the National Health Initiative directive in reducing maternal deaths as a result of complications in the operating theatre.
