Degrees-for-sale probe almost done
Media report confirms Zululand Observer's revelations of a massive degrees-for-sale scam and sex-for-marks scandal at the University of Zululand
A MEDIA report this week confirmed Zululand Observer revelations of a massive degrees-for-sale scam and sex-for-marks scandal at the University of Zululand as correct.
The report, published by Johannesburg-based Business Day, cites an unnamed university source who had access to an internal preliminary investigation report into the issues, and confirmed that investigators had found them to be true.
The ZO published articles in June and July last year, exposing the apparent fraud.
According to the Business Day article, university management launched the investigation in October following the media reports to probe allegations that lecturers were passing female students in exchange for sex and even selling marks – and eventually, complete qualifications.
‘An insider at Unizulu who has seen the preliminary report into the investigations said the probe not only confirmed the existence of the two subjects of the investigation, but also implicated academics, staff members and administrators at the university,’ the article read.
The article further mentioned that the spokeswoman for Unizulu, Gcina Nhleko, responded to questions emailed by the publication.
‘There are preliminary findings, but we cannot communicate them until we get permission,’ she told the publication.
‘These pertain to both investigations because, whilst they are separate, there is a holistic approach in solving/investigating them,’ it quoted her as saying.
The ZO, in collaboration with other journalists, has been investigating issues at the university for several months.
