UPDATE: Teen link to cow shooting

Bay learners pinged for cow killings

THREE 15-year-old Richards Bay learners have been linked to the fatal shooting of three cattle in the forest area near Mandlanzini early last month.

Police are investigating reports that the youths, riding off-road bikes, used a rifle belonging to one the trio’s father to commit the crime that enraged the broad community.

Condemnation had been swift from all quarters, with Richards Bay SAPS Station Commander Brigadier Brenda Mgenge calling the act ‘cruel and heartless’.

Numerous shots were fired at the cattle, and the herdsmen were forced to flee for their lives.
Owing to their ages, the names of the alleged culprits may not be made known.

Police are continuing their investigations and taking statements, while negotiations between the various parties involved are believed to be ongoing.

Monetary compensation for the loss of the cattle would also be part of the process.

It is likely the boys will be sent for psychological evaluation in preparation for formal charges that may be laid.
