The awards’ ceremony was held at the Municipality Hall on Friday, 20 January
THE 2016 top matric performers within uMfolozi Municipality were honoured by the municipality when it hosted the matric awards ceremony.
The awards’ ceremony was held at the Municipality Hall on Friday, 20 January.
The top two learners received iPads, laptops and full bursaries, while the remaining eight received laptops and full bursaries.
The rest of the 85 successful matriculants received registration fees for their university studies and were also awarded certificates.
Addressing the university hopefuls and their parents, Municipal Manager Khulumokwakhe Gamede said the aim of the municipality is to play a positive role in the lives of the children living under uMfolozi Municipality.
‘It takes a village to raise a child, therefore we need to help them change their lives and those of their families for the better. In turn they will then be able to come back and make valuable differences within their communities.’
Gamede went on to say the municipality aims to achieve three main objectives – the promotion of education as a poverty fighting tool, to increase the number of learners who achieve higher education qualifications and to encourage them together with their educators to produce outstanding matric results.
The highest achieving pupil in the municipality was Welabasha High School’s Phakama Kwanele Mthethwa, who achieved seven distinctions.
Armed with such accolades, Phakama is heading to the UKZN Medical School to study medicine.
