UPDATE: Prep school learner suffered heart failure

The learner’s death came as a massive shock to staff and other learners

AN autopsy has revealed that 11-year-old Yandiswa Magwaza, who died after collapsing at school last week, had suffered heart failure.

Yandiswa was walking along a school corridor when she collapsed and was taken to the Empangeni Preparatory School’s sick bay where teachers, paramedics and pharmacy staff all tried and failed to revive her.

Empangeni SAPS spokesman Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose confirmed the post mortem attributed her death to heart failure.

‘An inquest docket was opened to enable us to determine the cause of death,’ he said.

It is not clear if Yandiswa, an only child, had a pre-existing heart condition.

The learner’s death came as a massive shock to staff and other learners, some of whom are due to receive counselling.

‘I have never in my life witnessed the kind of pain felt by those parents. We were all sobbing uncontrollably,’ said one educator a day after Yandiswa died.
