Thousands of mourners were gathered at Mnini area, south of Durban to pay their last respects to Bongani Maduna
THOUSANDS of mourners, including MECs, mayors and government officials were gathered at Mnini area, south of Durban to pay their last respects to Bongani Maduna, the driver and police VIP for the KZN MEC for Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Sihle Zikalala.
Maduna passed away tragically last week when the car he and a colleague were travelling in overturned on the N2 near Richards Bay.
Addressing the mourners, a visibly distraught Zikalala described Maduna as a colleague, comrade and friend.
‘To me Maduna was not just a comrade and a loyal employee. He was also a brother and a confidante. I can say without a doubt he was an open and transparent person,’ the MEC said.
Maduna had been a dedicated and reliable driver for Zikalala for the past six years.
Previously, he worked with the late Deputy Mayor of the then uThungulu District, Thulani Mashaba.

A martial arts expert, Maduna founded a karate team in Chesterville, where he once lived, with the aim of inculcating a culture of discipline among the township youth.
‘He was evidently a man of many talents, because besides working as a protector, Maduna was also an avid photographer, hence we, in our team, had our own professional camera and video person,’ Zikalala added.
Bongani Maduna is survived by his wife, Bawezile and his two daughters, Ziyanda and Balungile.
