Local performer empowers her community

KWADLANGEZWA-BORN artist Zime Nomthandazo Mpanza (29) is known for her talent across the province, and now this experienced performer wants to give back to her community.

This talented actress, dancer and musician plans to share her skills with the youth by conducting acting classes and workshops through her organisation, Siwela Youth Project.

With this initiative she aims to empower boys and girls in the area who are interested in art, especially drama and music.

‘Many people don’t believe in art, and those interested don’t have a platform to learn about the industry. I want to change that and offer them something to look forward to,’ she said.

Zime has made a name for herself in the entertainment industry, and after working in huge South African productions she believes she has collected enough skills to share with those she holds dear – her community.

Her bag of achievements include working with many top directors such as Xolani Dlongolo, Bhekani Thabede and Mthandeni Mbambo.

She is one of few Zululanders to have performed on major stages such as the Play House Theatre and at the Grahamstown Arts Festival.

Her productions include Blood, Sweat and Nothing and Three Roots.
Apart from her involvement in art, she is currently conducting life skill and fitness classes in KwaDlangezwa, and is also part of the national DramAid group as a facilitator.

For years she has been involved in community youth projects and running the Back to School charity programme is part of her charity initiatives.

Every year she provides school stationery, full uniforms and assistance to many disadvantaged children.

‘I always say people, no matter where they go or where they are, must always add value to lives of those around them,’ Mpanza says.
