Heavyweight hippo danger
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is urging motorists to exercise caution when travelling in the vicinity and to refrain from approaching the animals
A HIPPO alert has been issued after numerous sightings of these dangerous animals in Richards Bay last week – on land and in the water.
Most frequently seen in and alongside the Mzingazi canal, the hippos are also crossing the John Ross Parkway to Lake Mzingazi,
A picture of a hippo grazing outside a Meerensee home was also circulated on social media.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is urging motorists to exercise caution when travelling in the vicinity and to refrain from approaching the animals.
Conservation Manager Frans Mthembu said there were a number of hippo sightings last week on the John Ross Highway near the canal, and confirmed a hippo was spotted on Wednesday night around 9.30pm near Green Africa Nursery .
‘The hippos walk across the roads between the robot intersection at the John Ross Highway and North Central Arterial up to the Greenhills intersection and leading up to the Small Craft Harbour.
‘We urged the community not to approach the hippos and if they want to take photos it must be done from a distance as these are dangerous animals,’ said Mthembu.
‘The animals browse on land at night and canal anglers on the banks of the canal must be especially alert.’
