Unizulu swamped with applications
The University will have to reject more than 75 000 hopefuls
MORE than 80 000 students have applied to study at the University of Zululand this academic year, but 95% of them are in for disappointment.
According to Unizulu spokesperson Gcina Nhleko, the university only has space available for 5000 students.
To assist those who made the tight cut, the university is now piloting an online registration process for the Richards
Bay and KwaDlangezwa campuses for first-year students.
‘We will not be attending to walk-ins as the process of application is handled by the CAO (Central Applications Office).
‘Students must log online or call the CAO to check their status on the CAO website.
‘Registration for first years is between 16 and 20 January.’
Despite the desperate situation, Director at the Independent Institute of Education, Dr Felicity Coughlan, said the lack of space at public universities does not spell doom and gloom for degree dreams.
‘Dreams can still become reality at the close to 120 registered private higher education institutions across the country – institutions which are subject to the same oversight as public universities, and whose qualifications are highly respected in the workplace.
‘Many of these higher education institutions, which by law may not call themselves private universities, offer high quality degrees and are accessible to students who did not get in to the public sector institution of their choice.
‘Furthermore, prospective students are increasingly opting for private higher education by choice because of throughput rates and small class sizes, among other factors.
