CONDEMNING the brutal attacks on persons with albinism and creating awareness about the condition, Mandlanzini-based Albinism awareness programme, Lenkosi Ngomane Project, hosted an awareness drive at the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre last week.
Spearheaded by Chairperson Velankosini Ngidi, the campaign aimed to dispel myths associated with the condition and share information as albinism is still profoundly misunderstood, socially and medically.
In addition, the project donated school bags with stationary packs to four local children.
Ngidi said people with albinism are being threatened owing to myths and beliefs influenced by superstition, leaving them excluded socially and open to various forms of discrimination.
‘We have to dispel these myths.
‘Body parts of albinos cannot cure illnesses and sleeping with someone with albinism will never cure HIV/Aids.
‘These people are being dehumanised and horrifying physical attacks are being committed against them. This year we need to put a stop to these senseless killings and support the fight against these vicious and violent acts.
‘Awareness must be promoted throughout the year and communities must be educated to take action against these criminal acts.
‘Persons with albinism deserve to have their rights to life and security protected.
