Top marks for Dlangezwa High’s Nqobile
Nqobile Mngomezulu earned seven distinctions and was named as the top achiever in the district
GETTING up at 4am, which sometimes meant extremely cold mornings, finally paid off for Dlangezwa High School Grade 12 pupil Nqobile Mngomezulu (17) when the matric results were released last week..
She was named the top matric pupil in the King Cetshwayo District.
This achiever from Mhlanga Reserve in Ngwelezana scooped an impressive seven distinctions, scoring 97% in maths, 94% in physical science, 93% in life sciences, 89% in IsiZulu, 86% in English, 88% in geography and 85% for life orientation.
Although some district learners earned eight distinctions, Nqobile percentage aggregate was the best.
‘I knew I would pass, but didn’t expect this. All gratitude and credit goes to God and my teachers, who were always supporting and motivating us,’

‘It was hard work and sometimes it was so difficult to wake up for study session early in the mornings,’ she said.
Nqobile said she also found strength to face challenges from her mother, who is an educator.
‘She motivated me every day and I am grateful to have her in my life.’
Nqobile’s excellent achievement was acknowledged along with other top performing KZN pupils at a special awards ceremony hosted by Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane in Durban on Thursday.
It was during the function that she was announced as the top achiever in district.
‘I will never forget that moment; it was the best moment of my life. It is one thing to top the school, but the district is a blessing from God,’
Nqobile wants to study medicine at Stellenbosch University, and then jet off to Oxford University in the UK to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology.
‘We don’t have many gynaecologists in the area, and I am more interested in that field. But I will decide when I start my education. I might choose to specialise in something else,’ she said.
Before packing her bags for varsity, Nqobile has one wish.
‘I would love to have a hotel experience and spend a night there. This is one thing I would love to do and it can be my present for working hard last year,’ she concluded with laughter.
Her teachers and the district management also congratulated Nqobile on her achievements.
