Players prepare for pool carnival

Locals cue up for SA Pool champs.

LOCAL players will feature prominently when the SA Blackball Pool Championships take place from 17 January at Carnival City.

Six highly talented members of the Alton-based Blackball Pool Academy have been chosen to compete for various teams.

Topping the list is Jeremy Jude Yenkiah, who has represented KZN at numerous events.

In 2016 he finished third during the KZN Provincial Championships and this year he will play for KZN ‘A’ in the senior category – the highest level of competition.

André Strydom, who ended 20th during the Seniors KZN Provincial Championships, will represent KZN ‘D’ – his first appearance at national level.

Lena Botha started playing pool in 2001 and in 2016 she claimed third spot at the KZN ladies championships.

She will represent KZN Ladies ‘A’ and this will be her 11th year of representing KZN at the National Blackball Championships

Gona and Shanla Govender became involved in pool when supporting their children. Their interest in the game grew and over the past six years they were selected as managers for various KZN teams.

This year Gona will manage the KZN Under 23 ‘A’ and Shanla the KZN Under 23 ‘B’ teams.

Pierre Heenen was a founder member of Zululand Pool in 1988. A local police officer, he also serves as Vice Chairperson of SAPS Blackball Pool.

A veteran of the game, he has already participated in 23 national and 6 SAPS Blackball Championships, winning the National Blackball Masters Doubles Championship during 2013.

Pierre will represent the SAPS in the Masters category.
