District awarded fourth clean audit

This was the first local government audit announcement in KZN

THE Auditor-General of South Africa has given the King Cetshwayo District Municipality its fourth consecutive nod of approval.

District Mayor Nonhle Mkhulisi on Wednesday announced their success for the reporting year 2015/2016.

‘We are aware that as the council, we had challenging times because of the drought, but that did not stop us from maintaining strict financial management, good governance, and credible, accurate and reliable reporting.

‘I thank the councillors and staff members who have all contributed to this wonderful achievement and commit ourselves to continue making better the lives of our people.

‘As the District we have once again proved that you can still do service delivery and sustain the record of clean governance and prudent financial management.’

This was the first local government audit announcement in KZN.

Cabinet did however reveal three weeks ago audit outcomes nationwide indicated an overall improvement of 8%.

But Minister in the Presidency responsible for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe, said despite this good news, results still highlighted risks and challenges.

‘The release of the 2015/16 audit results by the Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu of national and provincial departments and their entities underscores the importance of performing the basics properly and consistently.

‘These are implementing plans to address deficiencies in financial controls based on commitments already made; providing effective leadership and monitoring achievement of performance targets; and reviewing and monitoring compliance with key laws and legislation over financial matters,’ said Radebe.

Cabinet also called on all sectors to join government in a united front to protect the country’s investment status heavily reliant on international ratings agencies Moody’s, Fitch and Standard and Poors.

Minister Radebe said government has been working with business, civil society and labour to translate the country’s plans into actions to ensure SA remains an investment grade country.
