THIEVES are having their pick of cash and valuable goods left in vehicles thanks to the nifty trick called ‘remote jamming‘.
While this has been a well-known criminal activity in Richards Bay’s parking lots for years, where perpetrators use a jamming device to stop cars from locking by remote, police are especially concerned about the escalation of cases during the festive season.
‘We urge motorists to avoid parking vehicles where there are no security officers,’ said Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson, Captain Debbie Ferreira.
‘Also do not leave your firearm in the car’s glove compartment or anywhere in the vehicle when it is parked – this is against the law!
‘Be aware of people coming to you and informing you that you have a flat tyre, which is often done with the intention of stealing items they see inside the vehicle.
‘Do not use a cell phone unless you have a hands-free kit and lock valuables in the car’s boot where it is out of sight.
‘Never leave handbags and briefcases visible and do not leave keys in the ignition,’ she said.
