Dezen has buckets of talent

The youngster has all the talent and skill to become the next Jordan Speith

EXTREMELY talented, mentally focused and skilfully driven, but landing short in the financial bunker is Richards Bay golfing prodigy Dezen Oosthuizen.

The 16-year-old Richards Bay High School pupil currently plays off a 3 handicap after a rugby knee injury, but is a scratch handicap player who has carded numerous rounds of 3 under par at the Richards Bay Country Club this year (68 on a par 71).

The towering 1.93m lad recorded a drive of 320 metres this year and has two hole-in-ones under his belt (2011 and 2016).

He is currently a member of the KZN and SA golf teams, who will do battle in Durban early next year.

His sporting resumé is mighty impressive, with first team rugby, KZN U16 fifteen man and sevens rugby included with his golfing achievements.

‘My most memorable moment was shooting two under par at the Ernie Els Primary School Championships at Copperfield Country Club in 2012, where I sank a long putt on the 18th to put Richards Bay Primary School in second spot overall in South Africa,’ said Oosthuizen.

The youngster has all the talent and skill to become the next Jordan Speith, but may not reach his full potential owing to financial constraints.

‘My dad died in 2012, so we are feeling the financial pressure. I would love to be able to go to gym, have a coach and be able to participate in more tournaments.’

Dezen has played for the KZN golf team since 2012 and made the SA team in 2013 and last year.

He started playing golf at age 12, after a friend introduced him to the sport.

He practices seven times a week for 6-7 hours and when not working on his swing, he loves fishing.

‘I would love to go to university and study architecture or something in sport, with the hopes of getting recognised for golf or rugby. I would like to turn professional by 24 and play on the Sunshine Tour and Pro circuit at 27.’

His motto is simple – one swing, one step and one goal at a time.
