Cancer spirit shines through

Cancer DayNite Walk attracts community carers

ALTHOUGH the numbers were down compared to previous years, the positive spirit that prevailed more than made up for this at the CANSA DayNite Walk held at Veldenvlei Primary on Saturday.

Some 500 people entered the gates, with 30 exhibitor stands and 21 different companies represented.

The occasion was opened by Zululand Observer Editor and CANSA uThungulu volunteer Dave Savides, who reflected on the four-fold function of the event, namely to remember those who lost their lives to cancer; to pay tribute to cancer survivors and their caregivers, to educate and raise awareness about cancer prevention and to raise funds for research and operational costs.

After a hectic warm-up courtesy of CrossFit Richards Bay, the mood was calmed as the survivors lap began official proceeding.

From then on it was all energy, with themed laps allowing for fancy dress and fun as party music blared over the field.

Bell Equipment won the floating trophy for most funds raised, as well best exhibitor stall and best food stall.

Nashua were named winners for best team spirit, South32 won the prize for most corporate participants and Veldenvlei Primary boasted the school with most participants.

‘Those who were not here missed out on a truly awesome event,’ said CANSA volunteer Marlise Venter.

‘We want to build from here and just go bigger and better. We have already had some suppliers committing to be more involved next year.’
