Desiree’s squad pull through

Muscle action at Addison Park

LOCAL athletes tested their mental strength and pushed their physical abilities beyond breaking point while competing in the Boot-Thuze Relay Race hosted by Bootcamps uMhlathuze at Addison Park on Friday evening.

Seven teams comprising of six members completed five obstacles over a period of an hour, with the most completed laps determining the the trophy winners.

Five stations were set up around the 400m field – the acid river, battle rope pull, log throw, tyre pull and farmers walk.

The acid rope walk was set up over 20 meters, where competitors had to walk across the demarcated area using wooden blocks.

Once completed, the athlete would sprint to the battle rope pull station and tag their team-mate, who would straighten the rope over 15 meters, before sprinting to the log throw station and tag the next team-mate.

There the log would be thrown and a jump completed repeatedly over 30 meters for the next tag at the tyre pull station where a tyre had to be pulled over 20 meters.

Once completed, that team-mate would sprint to tag their last friend at the farmers walk – carrying kettle bells ranging from 12 to 24kg over 40 meters before sprinting to the scoreboard to get one point for completing one lap.

The process was repeated for an hour.

At the end of the muscle-cramping 60 minutes there was a three-way tie at the top of the points ladder.

It was decided to have a squat till you drop competition to declare the winner.

In the end Desiree Verwey’s team was crowned champions, followed by Cathy and then Fritz’s teams.
