Cemetery given new life

ZAI Architects and Consulting Engineers have been tasked with the R6.5-million project

THE King Cetshwayo regional cemetery, which runs parallel to the John Ross Parkway, is currently undergoing its final phase of upgrading.

According to Municipal Manager Mandla Nkosi, construction was implemented in phases and the fence around the cemetery, which was taken down some four months ago, had been prioritised.

‘Part of the scope of works for the upgrade is the renovation of the existing palisade fence around the perimeter of the cemetery.

‘The upgrade had to be prioritised owing to the poor condition of the existing palisade fence through weather and vandalism by informal settlers around the plantation over the years.

‘The demolished fence will be replaced by a more durable and aesthetic one which will protect the cemetery against trespassers.’

ZAI Architects and Consulting Engineers have been tasked with the R6.5-million project which involves upgrading infrastructure such as roads, storm water drainage, water mains, parking, extension of burial blocks and the fencing.

Nkosi said the project, which was originally scheduled for completion in October, has been extended owing to the delays experienced during the construction, but could not confirm a final completion date.
