ESHOWE police are investigating two murders reported within an hour of each other on Wednesday night.
The first murder was reported in the Berea area, KwaMondi, while the second was called in in the Eziqwaqweni area, both outside eShowe.
Berea residents heard several gunshots and on investigation found a white Nissan sedan parked in the middle of the road.
The driver’s side window was shattered and he was found with several bullet wounds to his head.
Police officers identified the driver as Mtokozisi Christopher Shandu (29) of the Eziqwaqweni area.
It is believed he was shot by a passenger as all the bullets were fired from the front passenger side within the vehicle.
The deceased is known as a metered taxi driver.
Half-an-hour later a second report was received from residents at Kwazandlane farm, also known as Yardley’s Farm.
A security guard on duty at the cottages was informed of a suspicious motor vehicle.
He investigated and saw a vehicle in the bushes with its headlights still on. On inspection, he found the driver had been shot several times in the head.
The driver’s window was still closed, but several gunshots were also found to have been fired from within the vehicle from the passenger side.
The deceased was identified as Mandlakhe Dumisani Zikhali (22), also a metered taxi driver.
Police believe the murders are related to ongoing animosity between taxi drivers belonging to two taxi associations and metered taxis who do not belong to any association.
