Keeping diabetes in check

'It is not the end of the road if people are diagnosed with diabetes'

ABOUT 350 community members visited the World Diabetes Day stall hosted by the HM Diabetic Clinic at Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre on Monday.

The community outreach initiative aimed to create awareness about diabetes, dispel myths associated with the condition and encourage the public to have regular health checks.

According to organiser Linda Brett many people are not aware they suffer from diabetes or experience elevated sugar levels and this is why regular testing is important.

‘It is not the end of the road if people are diagnosed with diabetes. Sometimes all it takes is a change in lifestyle.

‘Many people shy away from getting tested, but education and awareness is crucial as elevated sugar levels can have a negative effect on other body organs such as kidneys and eyes.’
