Local art exhibition: The Lost Fortune

‘He encouraged me to continue painting, and that’s what I did'

TWO Richards Bay artists, Driekie Swartz and Wilma Heyneke, are currently showcasing their art exhibition at the Empangeni Museum.

Through their exhibition entitled The Lost Fortune, Driekie and Wilma showcase a range of portrait and landscape paintings that creatively tell a tale through eclectic and interesting brush strokes.

Both self-taught, Driekie admits that she has only been painting for four years.

‘I have always had an interest in art, but I was not aware that I had the ability.

‘I only realised that about four years ago after having fun with my sister one afternoon.

‘Her neighbour was an artist and we decided to do some paintings with him and he absolutely loved the craft paintings I did that day.

‘He encouraged me to continue painting, and that’s what I did.’

Meanwhile Driekie has encouraged artists to submit and showcase their work through exhibitions.

‘When you sit with more than 50 large paintings and no place to exhibit, you discover how important it is to promote yourself through exhibitions.

‘There is no better, easier or other way to sell than through exhibitions, especially when you do large paintings.’

Emangeni Museum curator Ildiko Kovas is calling on local artists to submit their works to the museum by the last week of November for the local artists display.
