Creating opportunities for rural women

The 75 participants were divided into groups of 15 women who attended the five courses over 15 days

SEVENTY five women were given an opportunity to learn a skill which can change their lives.

This is thanks to a cooperative project involving United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) as implementing agent, the Finnish Government and KwaMbonambi-based ICE Forestry Consulting and Training.

The women, who were selected from the KwaMbonambi and Port Durnford areas, were given basic training in brush cutter operations and clearing saw operations, which will place them in good stead in being able to either start their own business or possibly be employed in the forestry or agricultural industries.

Selection of the women was undertaken by Ray Kinsey, the owner and operations manager of ICE who was assisted by facilitators from SiyaQhubeka Forests.

After the trainees had received their certificates from Robert Novak, the Industrial Development Officer of UNIDO head office in Vienna, Austria, 15 women were selected to attend an entrepreneurship course at the Sappi Riversdale Training Centre near Richmond.

This training concentrated on various business skills including, among others, how to access business opportunities, how to negotiate deals, drawing up business plans and customer service and satisfaction.

On their return these women will receive further support to assist them in setting up their businesses.
