Science Centre a beacon of light

Through its efforts, they have ensured the continuity and growth of the centre, which to date has hosted and inspired more than half a million youngsters

THE Unizulu Science Centre is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its founding on 6 November 1986. Coincidentally, the centre is this very week hosting the 18th annual Southern Africa Science Centres Conference in Richards Bay, a gathering of like-minded groups from across the sub-continent, with added input from international guests.

The Unizulu Science Centre is the perfect example of how public-private partnerships should function.

At the core is the University of Zululand itself, which from day one has provided both financial support as well as the necessary manpower for such a noble enterprise.

The oft-maligned institution has been unstinting in its commitment to carrying the main staff funding since taking over this burden from the National Research Foundation in 1997.

Through its efforts, they have ensured the continuity and growth of the centre, which to date has hosted and inspired more than half a million youngsters – a magnificent contribution in terms of the dire need to promote the science and mathematics skills so needed for the nation’s technological growth.

That the centre has maintained its popularity and status can be contributed to a number of factors.

One is that, through its lessons, demonstrations and hands-on exhibits, science has been made interesting, exciting and (especially) entertaining. This again is largely due to the award winning duo at the helm of the centre – Derek Fish and Alfred Tsipa.

‘Fish and Tsips’ as they are fondly known, are scientists in their own right, sharing a passion to pass on their love for the subject with hungry, enquiring young minds.

This they do with gusto and passion and the positive ripple effect as their learners have gone on to become leaders and teachers throughout the academic and professional world, is incalculable.

Behind this accomplishment is the vital matter of financial and material support from local corporates, which began when South32 (previously Alusaf and BHP Billiton) donated the premises at the ZCBF Community Park.

With continued support from them and other corporates, the initial vision has grown to a world renowned institution with an enviable reputation. We commend and congratulate this superb effort.
