Heavy rains cause damage

220 households were affected by the severe storm

TEARS flowed on Sunday as 78-year-old gogo Thendekile Ndaba recounted the traumatic experience she and her family had to live through when heavy rains battered the Ndindini area of Nquthu leaving a trail of destruction.

The six-member family, which is dependent on government social support grants, had to sleep at a neighbour’s house when their house collapsed as a result of the heavy rains. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Gogo Ndaba recounted her experience to KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Nomusa Dube-Ncube, who had brought a team of disaster management officials to the area to inspect the extent of the damage and provide emergency relief to households.

According to DubeNcube, 220 households were affected by the severe storm.

The department’s reports indicate that 11 people were injured in Nquthu, while one person died and five were injured by lightning in Msinga Municipality’s ward 15 (eNtabeni).

Dube-Ncube has encouraged communities to pay closer attention to weather reports and to take appropriate action to work with their municipalities to ensure that their houses meet proper building standards.
