Learners prepare to leave ‘skills school’

'You should never stop learning, because you never know enough'

MORE than 100 matriculants participating in the Bambisanani Learning Community Programme (BLCP) are looking forward to stepping into the tertiary world.

BLCP, an initiative led by the KZN Department of Education and Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), offers lessons and seminars at Grantleigh Schools to rural school learners to improve their academic performance in key learning areas such as mathematics, physical science, English and life orientation.

Three selected Grade 12 groups comprising 111 pupils participate, representing the following schools – Matamzana Dube, Mbuyiseni, Muntonokudla, Ndesheheni, Qantayi, Siyabonga, Zenzeleni Mashamase, Dlemu Dlemu, Langalibomvu, Ndlabeyilandula, Emkhayideni, Manqamu and Ntongande.

RBM acting communication and community relations general manager Moses Thokwane last week offered the matrics some valuable advice.

‘It is the start of a new life and a new world where opportunity is waiting.

‘Some of us understand how to grasp the opportunities which will present themselves, and know how to turn them into something fruitful and successful, but some of us do not.

‘It is not a great secret that knowledge makes a huge difference.

‘Being able to participate in the Bambisanani programme, one of the best initiatives in the province, already places you in a privileged position to take the opportunities which might be easier for you to find than for others.

‘But one of the things I have learned during my career, is that you should never stop learning, because you never know enough.

‘Whatever you do, do it with passion, learn as much as you can and never give up.

‘Other basic premises I have followed during my career is to be true to yourself; do not be afraid to speak your mind, but always be honest and communicate with people properly. Ideas are great, but you need to be able to turn them into action – and hard work always helps.

‘I believe South Africa right now is a place which offers unending opportunities.

‘In many areas, we live in uncharted territory, and very often it is not easy to navigate a path where few have gone before, but it is territory where great ideas and good leadership could affect immense change, and could even take the country, its people and its businesses into a completely different direction.’
