THANDA Royal Zulu conceded in the final minute of the game to draw 2-2 with Mthatha Bucks on Saturday.
Mhlengi Cele, with his 12th for the season, and Michael Gumede scored for the still unbeaten Amabhubesi.
And their disappointment at getting one point instead of three was compounded on Sunday when their closest challenger, Stellenbosch FC, scored at the death to win 3-2 against Black Leopards to close the gap at the top.
But other Sunday results favoured the Amabhubesi.
Santos and Royal Eagles played to a 1-1 draw; Jomo Cosmos beat Witbank Spurs 2-1; AmaZulu put 2 past Mbombela United without reply; and University of Pretoria were matched 2-2 by Real Kings.
This means unbeaten Thanda on 21 are still three points ahead of Stellenbosch, six points in front of Eagles and Cosmos, and eight clear of Leopards, Mthatha Bucks, AmaZulu and Spurs.
This Saturday will see them looking to extend their dominance at home against Tuks, who are currently 10th in the 16-team National First Division league.
