THE SAPS deployment of the uMkhanyakude Cluster, to monitor cross-border criminal activities, has yielded positive results.
Since the members were tasked with border patrolling, there has been a drastic decrease in crimes in and around the eManguzi area.
The police were positioned in the area after an increase in hijackings of 4×4 motor vehicles and bakkies within the Zululand region, which according to sources, were being taken across the border.
The KZN Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Maj Gen Bheki Langa, in consultation with other role-players, positioned more police to curb these crimes.
Successes made
During the period of 9 to 16 October successful joint operations by the different units deployed in the areas of eManguzi, Ingwavuma, Ndumo, Mbazwana and Hluhluwe netted a total of 33 suspects for various crimes.
These arrests included crimes such as house robbery, possession of counterfeit goods and drugs, vehicles suspected to have been stolen, contravening the Immigration Act by crossing the border illegally and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The team also recovered counterfeit cigarettes and clothing.
The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to establish if they were used in committing crimes in the province.
