Tourists in Thailand face disruption after King’s death
The world's longest serving monarch, 88, died on Thursday at Siriraj Hospital from illness
A YEAR of mourning and a 30-day moratorium on state events has begun with immediate effect after the death of Thailand’s King on Thursday.
Tourists heading to Thailand are being urged to ‘dress appropriately’ and to expect disruptions to their normal routine, while the Thai prime minister has said that entertainment must be ‘toned down’ for a month.
Soi Cowboy, a redlight district in Bangkok popular with tourists, will be closed indefinitely.
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was considered to be an almost God-like figure to his people, and government officials have urged tourists to wear dark colors during the mourning period, as a mark of respect to the locals.
Also, shoulders and legs should be covered during the mourning period, and remain sensitive to the public grief displayed by Thai people during this time.
