Cleanliness on the school timetable

Gamede reminded teachers of the old practice of ensuring pupils were always clean when coming to school

AT the ‘Clean Schools’ awards ceremony held at Meet Mekaar Resort on Thursday, teachers were reminded about their moral duty to teach their charges about personal hygiene and cleanliness.

The ceremony, brain child of uMfolozi Municipality with the aim of inculcating cleanliness among black communities, was a reminder of the importance of living in healthy, aesthetically beautiful surroundings as human beings.

Municipal Manager Khulumokwakhe Gamede told parents and teachers to begin when the children are young, so they grow up and become self-loving, environmentally-conscious human beings.

Gamede reminded teachers of the old practice of ensuring pupils were always clean when coming to school, in tidy school uniform, and of keeping their classrooms and toilets clean.

He encouraged teachers about their role in ensuring their school premises were tidy and danger-free for the children.

‘You can achieve this by recycling old broken desks and tables, bottles and cans and make a little money for your schools.

‘Teaching children about general good behaviour will ensure they grow up being responsible and love their surroundings,’ Gamede added.

He further emphasised the importance of educating people about valuing their public spaces, ‘consequently as a nation we will be able to value all things the government provides for us,’ he stressed.
