All calm at Unizulu, students report

Classes slowly resuming at University of Zululand as other campuses descend into chaos

AS university campuses around the country descend into chaos, students at the University of Zululand report that all is calm.

Two students told the Zululand Observer that some classes resumed this morning, but conceded that a large majority of students had not yet returned to campus.

‘They fear wasting resources if they return to campus before the issues between management and striking NEHAWU staff are resolved,’ said one student leader.

Meanwhile at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville campus, police and students are engaged in pitch battles.
Reports indicate that some fires were set to buildings at UKZN, and urgent appeals for parents to collect their children from schools nearby have been doing the rounds on WhatsApp.

Journalists on scene have described UKZN as a ‘war zone’, and the academic programme has been suspended for today.

Meanwhile, clashes between police and students at Wits University also turned violent this morning.
