Larissa shoots her way to the top

The SA Schools Champs will be held in Hartbeespoort Dam from 2 until 6 October

THE 2016 shooting season is well underway and Hoërskool Richardsbaai Musketiers are celebrating a phenomenal performance so far.

On 19 and 20 August KZN shooters took part in the South African National School Shooters Union (SANSSU) KZN Inter-schools league at Ferrum High School in Newcastle.

Altogether 72 shooters from Glenwood, Ferrum, Pionier, Voortrekker and Richards Bay high schools as well as some privateers gathered, pitting some of the best shooters in the province against each other.

Richards Bay High School’s Larissa de Valence showed outstanding form at the competition, walking away with the Best Shooter Trophy while Nellucia Botha earned the trophy for Best Improvement.

Nellucia is fast coming to terms with the sport and showed a 47% improvement by scoring 275 in the 3P event over her previous best earlier this year of 187.

Larissa managed to score 457 and 449 in her first and second 3P events (out of a possible 600 points) and 266 out of 400 in the 10M in the U16 Sporter category.

The 3P discipline involves shooting 20 shots from each of three positions: standing, kneeling and prone while in the 10M the shooter may only stand and fire 60 shots for men and 40 shots for women.

‘Larissa improved her personal best in the 3P with her score of 457,’ said Willem de Valence of the Musketiers.

‘She finished first in the women’s category (eighth overall) in the U16 Sporter category which secured her spot in the KZN team.’

‘I would like to congratulate her on this achievement and wish her all the best for the upcoming SA Schools Championships in October,’ he said.

While earning her a spot in the KZN Sharks team that will take on the rest of the country, Larissa also earned full school colours.

The SA Schools Champs will be held in Hartbeespoort Dam from 2 until 6 October.
