THE Africa Centre is a hub of scientific expertise in rural uMkhanyakude District and part of the Public Engagement Programme at the Africa Centre for Population Health.
The centre is currently on a mission to inspire the next generation of researchers.
On 25 August 24 Grade 11 pupils and teachers from Nomathiya and Inkosi Mgwazeni high schools, the two schools closest to the centre’s Demographic Surveillance Area headquarters at Somkhele, spent the day job shadowing some of the staffers.
Six specific careers were identified and staff volunteered to present short overviews of their respective careers and what courses the pupils needed to study.
The students spent time experimenting, which included doing statistical analysis of data, learning about the information technology infrastructure at the centre, producing a newsletter and role playing on data collection interviews.
One of the key learning areas was about the nature of research and an understanding of why Africa Centre staffers embark on door-to-door campaigns.
