Traffic focus criticism is warranted

Traffic officials in the spotlight... again

THROUGHOUT August and September this year, quite a number of frustrations were highlighted in your newspaper regarding the Traffic Department’s focus on various aspects of law enforcement.

The comments were generally all along the same lines, questioning the focus on speeding fines (on stretches of road that are regarded as relatively safe), and not on the enforcement of road safety.

Unsurprisingly, the authorities have been quiet, with no responses forthcoming.

Yet the behaviour continues.

The cable theft at the traffic lights on the big intersection at the Arboretum/John Ross Parkway intersection left ‘an uncontrolled and extremely dangerous’ situation, according to Andrew Payton, Senior Technical Assistant at the City of uMhlathuze.

At 7.30am that morning not a traffic officer was in sight, while morning rush hour tried to negotiate the intersection.

And yet, not even 5km away, they were busy setting up a speed trap on a stretch of three-lane highway between the Alton and Mondi intersections – a definitive example of where the focus lies.

Where is the logic?

JUST WONDERING
