Community demands #Drugsmustfall

Participants arrived bright and early ahead of the walk

THIS year’s SANCA/Bay Watch ‘Walk Away From Drugs’ community event broke all records with over 1000 entrants participating in the popular community awareness and fund-raiser fun walk on Saturday.

Hosted at the Zululand Yacht Club in Meerensee, participants arrived bright and early ahead of the walk and got into the groove with a fitness workout with Bootcamp uMhlathuze.

Walkers hit the traditional route from the Zululand Yacht Club to Naval Island and back, with colourful fun along the way, cheering, singing and dancing while taking a stance to promote drug-free lives.

According to SANCA Director – Shireen Sahadev, this year’s walk was a resounding success thanks to the hard work of the walk committee, volunteers, sponsors and the public’s support.

‘This year our numbers were great thanks to local transport companies, Ikhwezi and Biyela who assisted with ferrying pupils to the venue from seven schools within the City of uMhlathuze.

‘Schools really came out in their numbers to stand in line for the winning prizes sponsored by South32 Hillside Aluminum, Richards Bay IDZ and Mondi Richards Bay.

‘Over the years we have seen the numbers more than double and are happy to see so many community members joining the fight against drugs.’

This year’s winning school was Phesheya Primary School of Ngwelezana with 275 entries and Lizwe High School and Arboretum were the runners-up.
