WATCH: Battlefield, blood and burnout
'Doc-U-Mentally - last doctors standing' documentary on Ngwelezana Hospital's doctors, released
ASPIRING medical students must almost be able to walk on water to get into medicine school – and no wonder.
As doctors they must perform healing miracles on the wing of a prayer with virtually no resources.
A video documenting the almost superhuman feats of young doctors working in the trauma trenches of Ngwelezana Hospital has just been released in the hope of bringing winds of change.
‘Doc-U-Mentally – last doctors standing’ peeks into the lives of five young doctors whose daily grind includes treating horrific wounds, child rapes, near-drownings, accidents, burns and poverty induced illnesses – all working against the clock.
Directer and producer Francois Wahl, an accountant with a passion for film making, says he chose the title because junior doctors must be insane to work under the conditions they do.
The video takes an undiluted look at the extreme working conditions of SA’s 5 000 young doctors.
‘I was inspired to tell the story after experiencing almost first-hand what these young people go through.
‘The main focus was to show the race against time the doctors constantly face and how working 30-hour shifts impacts their moods, performances, stress and anxiety levels and personal safety,’ said Wahl.
