Fight feast at Bay High
The fund-raising event attracted a large crowd of eager supporters who witnessed 15 bouts
LOCALS were treated to unfamiliar boxing terms at the 5th annual Richards Bay High School boxing tournament held on Monday evening in the school hall.
Apart from the traditional weight divisions such as heavyweights and bantamweights, fighters also traded punches in the wood chopper, showman, mosquito and cocky bantamweight divisions.
Despite the heated blows exchanged in the ring, the number one priority was safety of the participants and respect shown in the ring.
The fund-raising event attracted a large crowd of eager supporters who witnessed 15 bouts.
Fighters completed three 90-second rounds.
‘We are trying to promote the sport and show that physical fitness is a must,’ said former boxing supremo Ray Peyters.
‘The atmosphere is good, the spirit is great and all athletes showed good sportsmanship. What was great to see is that no matter what happened in the ring, the fighters shared a coke after the bout and no hard feelings were felt.’
Peyters along with Freddie Horn and his boxing team were in charge of the event, with Dr F Roodt and Dr A Basson on hand for any medical issues.
