A MTUBATUBA family, at 719 Saligna Road, has been left at the mercy of criminals after a construction company, installing water pipes in the area, demolished the property’s front fence in January.
While digging in the front part of the garden, the contractor flattened about 75 metres of Mama Thabethe’s fence, uprooting the metal gate, and leaving mounds of mud strewn all over the front and in the driveway.
‘For seven long months we have been subjected to this mess. When it rains driving or walking in and out of my property is hell. With no fence we are exposed to criminal attacks at any time. The yard is overgrown with weeds and grass because keeping it clean is difficult in its the present state,’ said Mama Thabethe.
Melokuhle Construction Manager Bonginkosi Thabethe said the delay is caused by exposed electricity cables inside the trench, which poses danger to his workers, especially when it’s been raining.
‘I have been speaking to Eskom for months to come and cover the wires, to no avail. We have fixed the neighbours’ yards where we began working, but here it is impossible to finish the work because of the exposed cables.
‘I explained the problems we are facing to Mama Thabethe and I promise we will fix her fence and the gate as soon as Eskom sorts out the electricity wires,’ Thabethe said.
Mama Thabethe said she has also alerted the Mtubatuba Municipality about the problem and Ward 5 Councillor Ndumiso Zuma came to inspect the situation at her home.
Mtubatuba Municipality Spokesperson Mduduzi Mahlinza said the municipality was not aware of Mama Thabethe’s predicament, but promised he would go and examine the site himself.
