THE grieving family from uMlazi is still grappling to come to terms with a tragic death of a student after a social gathering turned murderous inside the University of Zululand (Unizulu) last Saturday morning.
Ziphozonke Ndlela (22) was stabbed to death following a dispute with a close friend during a block party at the institution’s Middle East building, where they consumed alcohol.
The duo allegedly had a fight before the incident, which led to Ndlela being stabbed to his chest and dying on the scene.
His sister, Nombulelo Ndlela told the Zululand Observer the family was traumatised and can’t get over what happened.
‘We were shocked to hear about Zipho’s death. He was humble man with a sense of humour.
‘All our hopes were with him as he was doing his last year.
‘We are told that his friend did this, but we leave everything in the hands of the police,’ said a tearful Nombulelo.
Ziphozonke’s friend was admitted to hospital to receive medical treatment, after he was brutally attacked by a mob of students shortly after the incident occurred.
Unizulu Director of Communication and Marketing, Normah Zondo released a statement last Monday, stating that the incident happened where access controls have not yet been implemented and said alcohol was not permitted inside the institution.
‘The process of implementation will be speeded up so that guards will be posted at the access points to ensure that prohibited items are not allowed into the residences,’ said the statement.
Empangeni SAPS spokesperson Captain Mbongiseni Mdlalose said the suspect appeared in the uMthunzini Magistrate’s court on Wednesday for a formal bail hearing.
