Give that man a sturdy bike

'To really chase down suspects in dense bush, I'm hoping to get a 29-inch 'softail' bike'

EMPANGENI resident Dean Maddocks takes pride in keeping his community safe in whichever way he can.

For more than 15 years the 45-year-old has sacrificed his free time to ensure criminals are brought to book, in doing so placed himself in dangerous situations, being shot at and stabbed.

Maddocks, a former security officer known as ‘Deano’, is often seen patrolling Empangeni and Richards Bay on his bicycle, which he says has its limitations in certain situations.

‘I’m currently using a 26-inch mountain bike, which has its limitations in rough terrain I’m sometimes forced to negotiate,’ he said.

‘To really chase down suspects in dense bush, I’m hoping to get a 29-inch ‘softail’ bike.’

However, as a volunteer, he is unable to acquire the bike on his own and hopes the community can assist.

For more information, Maddocks can be reached on on 076 8327710.
